author name

InDesign text boxes are a great way to organize content and when they are used correctly, they can make it easier for the audience to make out the document's message much more easily. But when not done correctly, a text box can become more of a nuisance than a way to organize the content on your document.

It is very easy to go overboard when using text boxes and end up having too many, which can make your document, look disorganized. This is why we thought we'd share with you a few tips to show you how to link text boxes in InDesign and make your document a little bit more presentable.

How to Link Text Boxes in InDesign

You create text in InDesign documents using text boxes and it may then become necessary to link one text box to another to continue a sentence or a paragraph on another page or section of the document. Linking these textboxes in InDesign is not that difficult to do. The following step by step guide to show you how:

  • Step 1: Begin by opening InDesign and then importing the file you need to edit into the program or creating a new document if you need to.
  • Step 2: If there are no text boxes on the document yet, you should begin by creating the text boxes you need. To do that, select the "Type Tool" from the tools bar.
  • Step 2: Now drag the cursor across the document to create the first text box. If you need to, you can use the black arrowheads on the text box to resize the text box anyway you want.
  • Step 3: Repeat steps 2 and 3 to create the second text box.
  • Step 4: with the text tool still selected, click on one of the text frames to add text. You can then easily change the color of the text using the Swatches palette, or change the font of the text. Do the same with the second text box.
  • Step 5: Now click on the text box you want to link to the first one and you will notice the "lines of text" cursor hovering over a target to link to and changes into a chain. The contents of the second box will move into the first one.

(Note: If you want to unlink text boxes in InDesign, you can double click the text box and break the connections easily.)
